The Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (BMC SAS) cordially invites you to a lecture by the world-renowned immunologist Dr. Evgeniy Eruslanov from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. The lecture, entitled “The Dual Role of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Modulating Anti-Tumor Immune Responses”, will take place on September 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. in the Dionýz Blaškovič Lecture Hall of the Institute of Virology, BMC SAS, Dúbravská cesta 9, Bratislava.
His ultimate research goal is to understand the role of TAN and TAM in the regulation of anti-tumor immune responses in human and develop novel approaches to improve the efficacy of myeloid cell-based immunotherapy for lung cancer.
Dr. Eruslanov became famous for discovering tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs), which undergo a unique differentiation process in the early stages of lung tumors, resulting in the formation of a specialized subgroup of TANs with anti-tumor capabilities.
For the last decade, he has been investigating the functional role of human tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells in patients with lung cancer. TAN and TAM represent a significant portion of inflammatory cells within the tumor microenvironment and influence nearly all steps of tumor progression. While pro-tumoral role of TAM is well established in many mouse models, Dr. Eruslanov has demonstrted that human tumor-associated macrophages are highly heterogenious and have a dual role in modulating T cell and NK cell anti-tumor immune responses in cancer.
The lecture is made possible thanks to the support of the Mobility Visit program, which provides funding for visits of distinguished foreign scientists to the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
