Scientists from the Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences have succeeded in isolating the first Slovak strains of the new coronavirus in cell cultures. After successful genetic characterization, the Slovak strains of SARS-CoV-2 will be sent to the European Virus Archive, making them available to the international scientific community for further research. The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) seems to be more efficient than the state in offering scientists the motivation to stay at home – or come to Slovakia. Within its SASPRO programme aimed at reducing brain drain from Slovakia, the SAV has received a total of 138 applications, out of which 38 scientists have been selected so far: 16 Slovaks and 22 foreigners.
