The Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (BMC SAS), in cooperation with the State Institute for Drug Control (SIDC), has accepted a mandate from the Slovak Minister of Health, Kamil Šaško, to analyze selected retained batches of COVID-19 vaccines.

The analysis will be conducted in close collaboration between SAS and SIDC. Both institutions have already launched the necessary professional processes and preparatory activities. The technical details of the mandate were clarified today during a meeting with Minister of Health Kamil Šaško and Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker at the premises of the Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

“In today’s world, we face a flood of dangerous misinformation – not only about vaccines. We believe it is necessary to strengthen public trust in scientific facts. We accepted this mandate with the aim of reassuring the public and bringing expert information into public discourse,” stated Professor Silvia Pastoreková, Director General of BMC SAS.

A team composed of experienced virologists, molecular biologists, and geneticists will carry out the analysis. It will follow strict scientific procedures in accordance with the highest standards and the most current knowledge.

“As apolitical and scientific institutions, we will approach the analysis independently, with an emphasis on scientific ethics and integrity,” added Professor Pastoreková.

Vaccination with mRNA vaccines began five years ago, and by March 2023, over 13 billion doses had been administered worldwide. “Today, we have a wealth of data and studies that clearly show the benefits of mRNA vaccines far outweigh the potential risks,” emphasizes PharmDr. Ivana Pankuchová, Deputy Director of SIDC, adding that vaccines are among the most rigorously regulated groups of medicines.

To date, no reliable scientific evidence has been found to suggest that the amount of DNA in registered mRNA COVID-19 vaccines exceeds safe limits. “Likewise, there is no medical evidence that residual DNA fragments pose a threat to the human body. The real threat to health is not the vaccines, but the diseases from which vaccination protects us,” emphasizes Ivana Pankuchová.

Currently, expert discussions on the methodology and scope of the analysis are being finalized. Since this is a demanding scientific process, details about the methodology will be published in the final report along with the results. The goal of SAS and SIDC is to deliver verified, transparent, and trustworthy conclusions.
