The Slovak Academy of Sciences Awards of 2020

In the private environment of the Small Congress Centre SAS in Bratislava, top scientists of the SAS were also awarded this year. The Slovak Academy of Sciences Awards are the highest award for the creative activity of its scientists. Following strict pandemic measures divided the awards ceremony into two days and per individual science departments. The SAS Awards were presented on Monday, June 28, and on Tuesday, June 29, by the President of the SAS, prof. RNDr. Pavol Šajgalík, DrSc., in the presence of the President of the SAS Assembly RNDr.  Katarína Gmucová, CSc., and Vice-Presidents of the SAS for individual Scientific Sections – Mgr. Martin Venhart, PhD., prof. RNDr. Karol Marhold, DrSc., and RNDr. Miroslav Tibor Morovics, CSc.

Ľudovít Paulis, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic accepted the invitation to the ceremony on Monday, and on Tuesday also Jozef Habánik, Vice-President of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Committee for Education, Science, Youth and Sport.

As stated by Ľudovít Paulis, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, the awarded scientists are just a sample of top SAS scientists who can compete with scientists abroad, and SAS itself is an institution with very high-quality scientific potential.

THE SAS AWARDS OF 2020 IN SCIENTIFIC SECTION 2 – LIFE, CHEMICAL, MEDICAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

The work of a researcher can be compared to a mountain carrier, said, among other things, Pavol Šajgalík, President of the SAS, in his speech at Tuesday’s award ceremony for Scientific Section 2, “they do it out of conviction, because they enjoy it and therefore they do it well”. He emphasised that scientific work is complicated, requires knowledge and a lot of creativity.

At the ceremony, the following received the SAS Award for the results of scientific and research work in Scientific Section 2:

Ing. Tomáš Bertók, PhD., EUR Ing., from Institute of Chemistry SAS for a set of publications in the field of analysis of complex carbohydrates for the purposes of medical diagnostics.

Mgr. Jozef Ukropec, DrSc., and a team composed of: doc. MUDr. Barbara Ukropcová, PhD., Mgr. Timea Kurdiová, PhD., Mgr. Miroslav Baláž, PhD., Mgr. Patrik Krumpolec, PhD., Mgr. Zuzana Kovaničová, PhD., MUDr. Martin Schön, PhD., Mgr. Michal Nemec, PhD. Mgr. Lucia Slobodová, PhD., from the Biomedical Research Center SAS for a set of publications on the mechanisms of regulation of energy metabolism in chronic human diseases and ageing.

The SAS Award for the results of international scientific and technical cooperation in the field of nanomedicine was received by RNDr. Alena Gábelová, CSc., from the Biomedical Research Center SAS.

The SAS Award for popularization of science and social applications of science for Scientific Section 2 was received by:

doc. RNDr. Tatianu Betákovú, DrSc., RNDr. Borisa Klempu, DrSc., MVDr. Juraja Kopáčeka, DrSc., a prof. RNDr. Silviu Pastorekovú, DrSc., from the Institute of Virology of the Biomedical Research Center SAS.
